Change display resolution:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

I've also seen this in some ubuntu help area.

Create root account. Assign a password:

sudo passwd

In response to #1:

With regards to resolution, I forsee two main problems: the first is that the user should not have to resort to a terminal to fix X (which also applies to the second point). The second is that a great many users will not have a clue what the answers to some of the questions asked are!

One of the points of Freespire is that you are not supposed to be doing this sort of thing - it should all just work!

Problem solved. Click-N-Run is now a free service for all Freespire and Linspire users and as I understand it CNR will be made Open Source for all to use.
